Quick checks before calling a technician

Before assuming the worst, it's worth ruling out the simplest causes first. Most of the call-outs we get around Marbella and the Costa del Sol come down to something straightforward:

  • Dirty filters. A filter clogged with dust restricts airflow and makes the unit cool far less, even though it's working fine internally.
  • Blocked outdoor unit. Leaves, construction dust or plants pressed up against the outdoor unit stop it from releasing heat properly.
  • Wrong mode or setpoint. Check the remote is set to cooling mode, not fan or dehumidify, and that the target temperature is below the room temperature.
  • Tripped breaker. If the unit won't switch on at all, check the fuse box before anything else.

If the unit still isn't cooling after these checks, the next steps are no longer a DIY job.

Causes that need a technician

Once the basic checks are ruled out, the fault is usually inside the refrigeration circuit or the unit's electronics. These are the causes we see most often on repair visits:

Low refrigerant from a leak

If the AC used to cool well and has been gradually losing power, a refrigerant leak is the most likely explanation. The unit may still start up normally, but it cools less each time, and in many cases ice appears on the indoor unit or on the copper pipework.

Frozen evaporator coil

Ice on the evaporator isn't a fault on its own — it's a symptom, almost always pointing to low refrigerant, a very dirty filter, or restricted airflow. Running the unit like this for too long can end up damaging the compressor.

Compressor or control board

New noises, vibration, a burning smell, or the unit shutting itself off are all signs of a problem in the outdoor unit's compressor or the control board. There's no shortcut here — it needs proper instrument-based diagnosis.

Outdoor fan not turning

If the outdoor unit is running but the fan isn't spinning, the unit can't release heat and protects itself by cutting output, or stopping altogether.

Why you shouldn't top up the refrigerant yourself

Working on the refrigeration circuit without the right training and equipment is a real risk — a safety one, because you're dealing with pressurised, regulated gases, and a financial one, because topping up gas without first finding the leak just empties out again shortly after. The correct approach is to locate the leak, repair it, and then recharge the exact amount of refrigerant the manufacturer specifies.

What happens on a repair visit

On a repair call-out around Marbella, we always follow the same order: start the unit and see how it behaves — error codes on the display, unusual noises, the actual outlet temperature — then check filters, coils, drainage and the outdoor unit, and measure the circuit pressures with gauges where needed. Every visit is documented with photos of the unit, its data plate and the fault found, and closes with a digital work report you can check afterwards.

How to stop it happening again
